Special Picture # 157 – The Island – The Docks

I am going to be on The Island until July 13th so I thought I’d give you an idea of what it has looked like over the 70 years we have owned it.

When I was a very small child, probably no more than 4 or 5, we had a very long (probably 15 or 20 feet) dock that was quite narrow – no more than 36 inches – pointing from the Island to the town beach where we parked our cars. It was destroyed one winter and the guys – Lad and his friends – built a 10 x 10 floating dock with a ramp and anchored it on the lee side of the Island. It was replaced once but the last one was in use for about 40 years. Every fall, the guys would go up to the Island on Columbus Weekend and float the dock around the Island to store it on Sandy Beach for the winter.

During the summer of 2006, two different people fell through parts of the dock and we knew we had to replace it. We gathered donations and in 2007 I went up to oversee the installation of the new dock.

This dock, also, is taken apart, floated around to Sandy Beach and stored for the winter. We just LOVE our new dock.
