Special Picture # 339 – “The Gang” at the Trumbull House – 1934

This is a photo of many of the young people who congregated at the Trumbull House. This photo was taken in 1936 on the side porch.  A few of them are mentioned in Grandpa’s early letters regularly. Those include Barbara Plumb (who was actually engaged to Dan for a while); Jane Claude-Mantle (who married Charlie Hall and is the mother of a great childhood friend); Ethel Bushey (very good friend of Elizabeth (Bissie) Grandpa’s only daughter); and Arnold Gibson (Lad’s best friend). Lad is in the back row, 4th from the right, Dan is in the  front row, 1st from the right, Dave is in the front row, 2nd from the right.

Mrs. P. – I found the original picture – It is dated 1934. I apologize for the confusion. In 1934, Lad would have been 20, Dan was 19 and Dave was 9.

I wonder if they had much awareness or concern about what was brewing in the world and how it would affect them in 3 years time.

    • Judy Guion says:

Gallivanta – That is a very good question. I don’t know if Grandpa had thought about it, he had lost his young wife just 3 years before. I don’t know how much my Dad (Lad) or Dan would be worrying about it.Lad was only 22 and Dan would be 21 that fall. They may have been working or already in the CCC camps sending their pay home to Grandpa to help support the younger children.

Judy–I’m behind on reading your posts, but I LOVE these pictures, as usual. I’m curious about this one–labelled 1936 on the post but 1934 on the saved picture. Wondering if you can date by the approximate ages of Lad and Dan and the women and other family friends you mentioned? It’s SO hard for me to see any pictures of Dan and not think of “my” Neil. I have seen the resemblance for years, and whenever I see pictures of Dan closer to the age Neil was when I met him, it’s eery. And recently, the last trip to see Chiche, one of her photos of Dan when I first met him (mid-80s) looks almost identical to the way Neil looks now!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and all of yours!

Etta – The original picture has the names of the individuals – and I think the date – but I can’t put my hands on it right now. I will research it.

Suggestion – Dave was born in 1925. Does he look 9 or 11 in the photo? Lad would be 20 or 22. Dan would be 19 or 21.. Until I can find that picture, what is your guess?

  4. I’ll bet the gang had lots of fun hanging out at the Trumbull house!

    • Judy Guion says:

Liz – If my childhood was anything like theirs, absolutely. There was always plenty to do and many different places to go on the property. We used a room in the barn as a pool hall – pool table, record player, couch – the works – and friends from all over town would come to play. Two hills to slide down, one steep enough to use cardboard boxes in the summer! A tree House in the Apple Tree. Several swings – one took us out almost over the road – sure scared quite a few drivers. Just a few of the special hings to be found at the Trumbull House.
